Copywriting For Affiliate Marketing
(A Beginners Guide + Examples)

Copywriting is difficult and takes years to master.

Thankfully for us, there are simple tips and formulas we can follow to write awesome copy quickly.

Here are 7 copywriting tips you can use right now to become a better copywriter/affiliate marketer.

Copywriting Tip 1: How To Write A Killer Headline

Your headline is one of the most (if not THE most) important parts of your copy.

Why?

Because it’s your first impression on a potential lead or customer.

If your headline doesn’t capture someone’s attention, they won’t read the rest of your copy.

When coming up with a headline, there are 2 formulas you can use to make the process simple.

The “how to” formula.

And the “list post” formula.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these 2 formulas…

Headline Formula #1: The How To Formula

The how to formula is where you start the headline with “how to”, followed by a benefit.

These types of headlines work well when you simply say what you have to say.

For example:

“How to Tie a Canadian Jam Knot!”

Or:

“How to Restring an Electric Guitar!”

And to really make your headline stand out, you can add a time frame on when they’ll learn whatever it is you’re showing.

Like so:

“How to Tie a Canadian Jam Knot in 15 Seconds or Less!”

Or:

“How to Restring an Electric Guitar in Less than 5 Minutes!”

Headline Formula #2: The List Post Formula

The list post formula is where you start the headline with a number, followed by a benefit.

And just like the how to formula, just say what you have to say and the headline will turn out great.

Here’s a few examples:

“3 Muscle Building Tips The Pros Don’t Want You to Know About!”

Or:

“5 Money Saving Tips That Could Make You Rich!”

When crafting a headline, there’s a few elements you should consider adding to really make it pop.

They are:

  • Put news in the headline: We’re all wired to pay attention when it’s news related.
  • Use curiosity: Curiosity will draw readers in like a magnet.
  • Promise a benefit: A sure fire way to capture attention.

Copywriting Tip 2: Use SubHeadings Throughout Your Copy

Subheadings give your copy structure.

They also break up large blocks of text and help the reader determine the overall outline of your copy.

Think of them as titles for the different sections of your copy.

You can see an example of subheadings in this post about keyword research:

how to use subheadings in copywriting

There’s a different subheading for the different sections of the post.

Subheadings should be used in every piece of copy you create.

Whether it’s blog posts, sales letters, PDF’s etc.

Quick Tip: If you use WordPress or any other CMS, always use H1,H2,H3 tags when writing any kind of headline. This helps with SEO & the structure/layout of your content.

Copywriting Tip 3: Know The Difference Between A Feature & A Benefit

A feature is something a product or service does.

A benefit is how that something will help the user.

As an affiliate marketer, you want to emphasize the benefits of a feature.

You can do this is by adding “so you can” whenever you mention a feature, followed by the benefit of that feature.

For example:

  • The new BMW M4 comes with air-conditioning, so you can keep cool while out cruising in the blistering heat.
  • You’ll learn how to tell when a woman is into you, so you can make your move with confidence and without the fear of rejection.
  • If you hate how long it takes to pitch a tent, our range of air tents will inflate in less than 2 minutes, so you can spend more time having fun with your family.

Simple, yet effective.

Copywriting Tip 4: Use Numbers In Your Copywriting

The use of numbers in copywriting is powerful, especially odd numbers.

You’ll see me (and many others) using numbers all the time.

Like in this post about the best autoresponders for affiliate for affiliate marketing:

Numbers have been proven to increase response, so use them everywhere you can.

Copywriting Tip 5: Inject Emotion Into Your Copywriting

A simple way to inject emotion into your copy is by using the “7 deadly sins.”

These are psychological elements that add story telling and drama into your copy.

The 7 deadly sins are:

  • Gluttony: More than you need.
  • Envy: The look on his face when.
  • Sloth: Easy, lazy, done for you.
  • Pride: Protect your family.
  • Lust: Woman drawn to you like an electromagnet.
  • Greed: Flashy cars/house.
  • Wrath: Finally get back at them.

Here’s a few examples of how you could use them in your copy:

  • This done-for-you marketing system will do all the selling for you, while you relax on the beach drinking pina-coladas all day long! (Sloth.)
  • Available this weekend only, you can get that new 4WD you’ve always wanted for a fraction of the price! (Greed.)
  • He’s going to be so jealous when he sees those washboard abs you’ve worked so hard for! (Envy.)
  • That pesky insurance company is going to lose my business forever! (Wrath.)

See how that works?

Copywriting Tip 6: Add Scarcity

Scarcity in marketing works.

Why?

Because it plays on people’s fear of missing out. (FOMO)

When it comes to scarcity, there are several tactics you can use.

Such as:

  • Limited time offers
  • Flash sales
  • Only “x” number available

You’ll see businesses doing this all the time.

Here’s an example from BlueHost with their Black Friday special offer:

An example of offering discounts

Whenever the companies you’re an affiliate for have special offers, capitalize on those offers and use scarcity to increase your affiliate sales.

Copywriting Tip 7: Create A Swipe File

A swipe file is a collection of marketing and copywriting examples to use for inspiration.

It’s a must have resource as an affiliate marketer.

And creating a swipe file is super easy.

You can create one (for free) using Google Drive.

Anytime you see you marketing material you like, take a screen shot or save it as a PDF/spreadsheet/document etc, then upload it into Google Drive.

Like this:

Doing this allows you to store files online, where you can then access those files anytime you want. (And from any device.)

When you’re creating marketing material and you need inspiration, turn to your swipe file.
