Affiliate Marketing Glossary

Affiliate Marketing

Where you sell other people’s products in exchange for commissions on all referred sales or leads.

Affiliate Link

A unique link that’s used to promote affiliate products.

All clicks and sales to that affiliate link are tracked back to the referring affiliate.

Affiliate Cookie

Is a piece of code that “sticks” to a users browser when they click your affiliate links.

That cookie is how clicks and sales are tracked.

Affiliate Disclosure

A statement you make on your website that let’s visitors know some of the links on your website are affiliate links.

Affiliate ID

An ID (like a username) that you use with your affiliate programs.

Affiliate Program

An arrangement (a program) between you and a company, where the company will compensate you for referring sales and/or leads.

Affiliate Manager

Someone who manages an affiliate program.

Affiliate Network

A huge platform with heaps of different affiliate programs available to promote.

Anchor Text

Clickable text on a web page. (Like the link just above.)

Campaign

As found in the dictionary; an organized course of action to achieve a goal.

Click Through Rate (CTR)

The number of people who click through to something vs those who didn’t.

Cost Per Action (CPA)

How much it costs you to generate some kind of an action from a user. (Usually an optin or a sale.)

Cost Per Lead (CPL)

How much it costs to acquire a lead.

Cost Per Click (CPC)

How much it costs to generate a click to an ad, an affiliate link etc.

Cost Per Sale (CPS)

How much it costs to generate a sale.

Cost Per View (CPV)

How much it costs to generate a view of an ad or video etc.

Conversion

The number of people who took a specific action e.g became a subscriber.

Conversion Rate

The number of people who opted into your email list vs the number of people who didn’t.

Cookie Duration

How long your affiliate cookie stays “stuck” to a users browser after they’ve clicked your affiliate link.

Content Management System (CMS)

A platform that’s used to manage content.

Earnings Per Click (EPC)

How much money you’ll make (on average) every time you send clicks (traffic) to an offer.

Ecommerce

Where you sell physical products online.

Impression

The number of times an ad is shown to a potential customer.

Internal Linking

Where you link from one of your pieces of content to another.

Lead Magnet

Something valuable you give away for free so you can build an email list.

Landing Page

A page someone lands on after clicking an ad, an affiliate link, a search result, or a link in an email.

Link Cloaking

The practice of disguising a URL by shortening and rebranding the URL.

Marketing Funnel

A sales process potential customers go through to convert them into buyers.

Meta Description

A summary of what a page or post is about that appears in the search results of Google.

Niche

A specialized segment of a general market.

Optimization

The process of tweaking specific parts of your marketing to boost response, leads, or sales.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

An advertising model where you pay a fee anytime someone clicks your ad.

Pay Per View (PPV)

An advertising model where you pay a fee anytime someone views your ad.

Pay Per Lead (PPL)

An advertising model where you’re paid for sending a company leads.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The process of optimizing blog posts to rank them high in Google for certain search terms.

Split Testing

Where you test multiple versions of something (an ad, an offer, a headline etc) to see which version gets the best results.

Tier 1 Traffic

Tier 1 traffic is traffic from an English first speaking country such as New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and U.S.A
